Seeing People, Inspiring Learning: A Leadership Lesson I Still Carry
Ten years ago, I created a professional development day that my teachers still talk about with joy, The Day of Joyful Learning. That day was more than a typical PD session. It was designed to engage the whole educator, the mind, body, and spirit. More than forty educators led workshops for their colleagues, sharing practical strategies to inspire them and students, being active together through dance, music, art, and play, and reflecting on their profession through mindfulness and meditation.
What I learned from that day has stayed with me ever since. When we care for educators as whole people, their energy, creativity, and engagement naturally ripple out to students and the entire school community. Leadership is not just about strategy or systems. It is about creating environments where people feel seen, valued, and inspired to bring their best selves to their work.
That experience continues to shape how I lead, whether I am designing professional learning, coaching future leaders, or fostering strategic collaboration across teams. I would love to hear from others—what practices or experiences have you found most effective in helping the people you lead feel seen, valued, and inspired?
